Brad Binder leads the Moto3 World Championship
The Moto3™ World Championship race in Argentina was declared a wet race, the surface of the track somewhere in between wet and dry. All riders came to the grid on wet tyres, but some thought that slicks would be the best option. The Termas de Rio Hondo is a track with high grip levels, the situation reminiscent of the 2015 Indianapolis GP. It was tense on the grid as a number of riders weighed their potential options, all riders hiding their tyre choice until the final seconds. Livio Loi (RW Racing GP BV) was the only rider to opt for wet tyres, the rest of the field, hoping the track would improve and that they could keep heat in their tyres, chose to run with slicks. Starting from pole position for the first time in his career, Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) made a solid start. But it was Romano Fenati (Sky Racing Team VR46) who shot into the lead, the only rider on the front row who started on a dry patch of tarmac. His lead would not last as Khairul Idham Pawi (Honda Team Asia) shot ahead and quickly opened up an advantage of over...
Victory Racing to return to Pikes Peak with Project 156 and the electric Empulse RR
Victory Racing has announced its intention to field two motorcycles in this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The Project 156 prototype bike will be ridden by 2014 Pikes Peak Heavyweight Champion Jeremy Toye and the Empulse RR electric prototype (raced in last year’s TT Zero at the Isle of Man) will be ridden by Cycle World’s Road Test Editor Don Canet in the Electric Motorcycle Class. Don previously rode Project 156 in 2015. “We are eager to bring the Victory Racing team back to Pikes Peak this year to help celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Race to the Clouds,” explains Alex Hultgren, Director of Marketing for Victory Motorcycles. “One way Victory lives and breathes Modern American Muscle is by continuously pushing ourselves through our performance and racing initiatives and since Pikes Peak is arguably the most challenging race in America, it’s exactly where we need to be.” Toye says he is looking forward to start testing Project 156 in mid-April and comments: “After seeing Don ride Project 156 last year and watching a lot of the onboard video footage, I cannot wait experience Project 156 for myself.” Meanwhile testing of the Empulse RR electric prototype...
Will Lorenzo make the move to Ducati?
Rumours that MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo could move from Yamaha to Ducati next season ramped up a level in Argentina. Indeed, some say a deal has already been done. But speaking in the paddock on Sunday evening, Ducati Corse Sporting Director Paolo Ciabatti insisted it was too early to decide on the team’s 2017 riders – while admitting ‘everyone is talking’ and pointing out that Lorenzo is not the only MotoGP champion still available… “We make no secret about knowing that both Marquez and Lorenzo have contracts that expire at the end of this season,” Ciabatti stated. “We have been looking into the possibilities and talking to our riders. Other teams are also talking to our riders. It’s quite normal at the moment. Obviously we wouldn’t be doing our job properly if we didn’t look into the possibilities. “This doesn’t mean there is any contract signed. Everyone is talking like we have already made our decision and signed a contract but this is not the case. It’s still a little early. Not early to discuss, but early to decide. We are not in a super hurry. It’s only the second race. Let’s say that exploring the possibilities.” Andrea...
